Born in Tanzania, Mohamed eventually settled in Kampala, Uganda. He began his career as an English teacher and later became Principal of the Aga Khan High School, until October 1972, when the forced Asian exodus of that year brought Mohamed and his family to Canada.
His love for music was nurtured by his parents from a very young age. Both parents were good singers and his Dad played the harmonium.
Known for his velvety smooth voice, Mohamed's vocal interpretations of ghazals, bhajans and devotional music, especially ginans (religious poetry), have endeared him to members of the Ismaili community. He loves Indian ragas, which allow him the melodic structure to improvise, especially when he plays the harmonium.
Mohamed ("Mac" as he is popularly known) is a former corporate banker and a retired business executive. He lives in Vancouver with his wife Zubeda. They have 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.
